Database Description
Grid point temperature data and analysed isothermal maps of surface water
temperature fields for the Great Lakes from 1966 to 1990. Grid point surface
water temperature data are abstracted from the surface water temperature maps
using consistent templates for each water body. Digital and paper archives are
maintained. Climatological analyses such as whole lake mean temperatures and
grid point normals are also produced. Brief documentation is provided for the
digital data products. No surface water temperature data available for 1991
and for most of 1992. Data are available since August 1992 to present;
however, the coverage is incomplete due to changes in the processing system
(data are only available as binary files and .GIF format images).
Geographic Area
Each of the Canadian Great Lakes: Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Georgian Bay,
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
Contents of the Database

longitude) of grid points.

More Details
Surface water temperatures of the Great Lakes (excluding Lake Michigan) were
initially collected by airborne radiometer surveys from 1966 to 1979. Since
1980, water temperatures have been retrieved from the NOAA TIROS-N satellite
using scanning radiometer AVHRR data. Routine analyses of Lakes Superior,
Huron, Erie, Ontario and Georgian Bay began in 1980. Analyses of Lake Michigan
began in 1987 and ended in 1990. The St. Lawrence Seaway has been monitored on
an irregular basis during freeze-up. Analyses were performed using IBM
compatible mainframe computer with custom software until 1990. Since 1992, a
PC and HP workstation are used and analyses are done on a weekly basis.
