Friday ( July 12): Fishery Issues
Objectives for the day:
  • Introduce fisheries issues in the Great Lakes and oceans
  • Describe the impacts and extent of influence of nonindigenous species in the Great Lakes
  • Illustrate technology for remote sensing of underwater biotic interactions

8 am Overview: Ocean fisheries issues (PowerPoint)

8:30 am Activity: Downeaster Alexa (from ACES (Activities for the Changing Earth System), the story of the Long Island striped bass fishery based on song by Billy Joel. Update with data from Atlantic Striped Bass Studies, 2001 Biennial Report to Congress, NMFS and USFWS (pdf file SB2001 on server)

9:30am  ROV demonstration by Matt Thomas. Examine extent of round goby nests in the Bay and relate the impacts of gobies as they interact with native species.

10:30am  Introduction of web site for education about aquatic nuisance species (Exotic Aquatics on the Move). Transparencies (PowerPoint available on web site http://www.iisgcp.org/EXOTICSP/PPT/EATM_files/frame.htm ).

11:00am  Steve Pollick, Toledo Blade. Fisheries issues in Lake Erie.

1:00pm Changes in Great Lakes sport fisheries. Examination of data sets and possible relationships to lake changes. Cooperative learning lab, no report required. Uses PDF file: Status 2001 (on server, from Ohio Division of Wildlife)

2-4 pm Time for teams to work on reports and projects.

7:45pm Guest lecture: Dr. Richard King, Lake Erie water snake research.
