Week Two: July 1-July 5
Monday, July 1, Field trip (all day)
Tentative schedule
1. Leave at 7:45 AM to catch the 8 am Miller Ferry to the mainland. Field trip sites are those illustrating lake level impacts (the major component of climate change scenarios for the Great Lakes Region).
2. 9:30 AM Port of Toledo (tour organized by Kelly Rivera, Trade Development Manager, Toledo Port Authority)
- see what a full service facility offers to shippers,
- hear about the status of shipping various commodities,
- learn about the impacts of low water and what the port does to offset problems
- nonindigenous species concerns
- issue of recreational traffic on the river (how it interferes with the shipping).
3. 11:45AM Lunch and tour of Crane Creek State Park
4. Drive through developing areas near Davis Besse Nuclear Power Plant; Green Cove Condominiums. Discussion of water level concerns for homeowners, developers, wetlands.
5. 1:30 PM Erosion and offshore management problems for a multiple use state facility. Discussions led by Ina Brolis, Park Manager.
6. 3:30 PM Miller Ferry to South Bass
7. 4:00 PM Stone Lab ferry to GibraltarField trip sites, maps and data ( Click the following links to get details)
Preparation for the day
- Work GLIMCES problem set and complete lab activity demonstrating water level impacts on shipping (to be distributed) This material is for use in cooperative groups, with results to be shared at different points during the field trip.
