Monday, July 8: Estuary Field Trip

Objectives: Experiences and discussions on the trip will

  • Demonstrate extent of coastal erosion in a bluff area of the central basin shoreline
  • Illustrate and compare effectiveness of methods of erosion control currently in use
  • Compare central basin beach characteristics with those seen in western basin
  • Examine methods used to manage a freshwater estuary for research and education
  • Synthesize methods and tools for long term ecological research

  Tentative Schedule:

    7:30: ferry to South Bass, taxi to Miller Ferry

    8:00 Miller Ferry to mainland. Pick up van and drive south on Rt. 53 to Rt. 2 East. Exit Rye Beach Road, turn north to traffic light then right (east) on Rt. 6.

    9:00:  Meet C. E. Herdendorf at Sandpiper Cove Apartments, Huron Plaza shopping center. View and discuss erosion causes, extent, and control at Sandpiper Cove and compare to Turtle Creek next door. Use images to be provided.

    10:00ˇ§Huron Islandˇ¨ Confined Dredge Facility on Huron River (east on Rt. 6).  Observe river  traffic and images of sediment plume, discuss dredging needs from previous activities. Walk to CDF and observe new ecological community.

    11:00: Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve and State Nature Preserve. Meet with research manager Dr. David Klarer to see research facilities and monitoring in progress. Walk to estuary overview and visit beach spit if possible.

    12:30: Lunch at Nickel Plate Park. Examine beach characteristics

    1:30: Go west on Rt. 2 to Rye Beach Road; Turn right onto Rye Beach Road. At the traffic light, turn left onto SR 6). Sawmill Creek Resort is located 500 yards around the bend on the right side of the road. Sheldon Marsh entry trail leads to the next area of study. http://www.glhabitat.org/news/glnews63.html has information about how the wetland came to be protected.     2:30: Start back to Catawba, target 3:30 ferry.
