Digital and Field Techniques
for Coastal Environment Studies (CE/NR797)

Course Summary

Dr. Fortner presented this Field Study Course at 31st Annual Conference in Boston, 2002, North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE)

Abstract of the proceeding

NSF¡¦s program in Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (DUE-CCLI) supported a course in ¡§Digital and Field Techniques for Coastal Environment Studies¡¨ at F.T. Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie in summer 2002. The course combined college students in engineering and environmental sciences, and introduced them to high technology tools (GIS, remote sensing, digital data) as well as high-touch tools of field observations and data collection.  It also challenged traditional teaching/learning styles through the use of collaborative learning and noncompetitive assessment.  This report includes the design and methods of course development,  content selection for Earth systems approach, evaluation techniques, and implementation issues.  Future development includes an Internet site (http://earthsys.ag.ohio-state.edu/nr797/) with information for others preparing related educational experiences.
