"The Lake Erie region abounds
with wild plant and animal life in an extraordinarily diverse natural setting.
Such a variety of communities exist here because this region is a great
meeting place for several distinct physiographic, climatic, vegetational
and floristic elements. Around Lake Erie, about 35% of the plant species
are trees and shrubs, 60% are perennial herbs, and 5% are anuuals. The
flora of the shoreline and islands alone consists of over 1,000 species."
(From Chap.3 Vegetation and Plant Geography in the Lake Erie Basin by John J. Furlong in The Great Lake Erie) |
