After the early settlement in the late 1790s, transportation development and industrial revolution resulted in serious water quality problems around the Great Lakes region. Thanks to intensive recovery efforts for the last 25 years, the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie, are believed to have come back. But many problems still exist and continuing efforts for monitoring, maintaining and  improving water quality are needed. (for more information of historical background associated with Lake Erie's water quality, please refer to the book The Great Lake Erie, Chap.12. Effect of Human activities on the Ecology of Lake Erie.)
1. Where do all the toxins come from and go? How do toxins move through the food chain?
2. How does the estuary serve as a nursery? What happens when nutrients enter an estuary?
3. To properly evaluate water quality, what factors should be considered and measured?
