Earth System Education
Publications
With the retirements of Dr. Mayer in 1995 and Dr. Fortner in 2005, we
have discontinued hard-copy distribution of our publications. We
apologize for this inconvenience. We have placed free downloadable
versions on this web site, and we hope you can use the electronic files
to print what you need.
- 1993 - A 300 page book with 20 activities for middle and high school students using an integrated approach to teach concepts in Earth, Biological and Environmental Sciences. Publication is not available in hard copy. Download activities using links to pdf files.
- This publication was assembled to provide a background in Earth Systems Education and help in the curriculum restructuring process. Each section can be used separately. The sections focus on a variety of themes that include the following: background articles, rationale for restructuring classroom science education, implementation strategies, assessment, sources of materials, example syllabus and sample activities. The blue link above provides an annotated description of the chapters, which can be downloaded individually. Hard copy is no longer available.
Ohio Sea Grant Publications
Supporting Earth Systems Content and Methods
- A reference textbook for educators and communicators. Chapters were written by experts in the topics represented, and targeted to audiences without a strong science background. Excellent supplement for the Ohio Sea Grant curriculum publications, as background reading for teachers and students.
- These books are designed to take a concept or idea from the existing school curriculum and develop it in a Great Lakes context, using teaching approaches and materials appropriate for students in middle and high school. The activities are characterized by subject matter compatibility with existing curriculum topics, short activities lasting from one to three classes, minimal preparation time, minimal equipment needs, standard page size for easy duplication, suggested extension activities for further information or creative expression, teachibility demonstrated by use in classrooms, and content accuracy assured by critical reviewers. Basic principles of lake effect, climate/water relationships, storm surges, and their relationship to the Great Lakes region. Activities are organized for cooperative learning, and have links to the National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks. Originally designed for middle school level. Includes internet sites useful for instruction on the topics.
Provides a packet of scientific scenarios of how global warming could affect the Great Lakes region, a review of climate models, and methods of teaching about those changes in secondary science and social studies classes.
- 1996 - A resource disk designed for Macintosh (System 7 or higher) but usable on Windows/Dos platforms as long as Netscape 2.0 or higher is available.
The CD does not require linkage to the internet to function, but its capabilities are expanded if it is allowed to access the built-in linkages with the net. The CD contains global and regional datasets of interest to science teachers in middle and high schools, presentations on the Earth Systems understandings and Geography principles, software for processing the disk data, a set of downloadable activities for Earth systems education about the Great Lakes, and some very useful graphics for developing educational materials. A special feature currently accessible only to Mac users is a Hypercard stack on the Great Lakes Areas of Concern (the so-called "toxic hot spots" around the lakes) and their characteristics as they conduct Remedial Action Plans. The CD was developed for teachers BY teachers!
Developed with the support of the Lake Erie Protection Fund and Ohio EPA, this book of curriculum activities serves as a sampler of all the ES-EAGLS curriculum topics (land/water interactions, air/water movement, life, environmental issues, and shipping). The sample activities were chosen with COASTWEEKS in mind, and each relates to things students could see and do at the Great Lakes shore. For each topic from classroom curricula, there is a new matching topic that can be done at the shore or on the internet!
- Classroom-ready readings, worksheets, games, labs, transparency masters, detailed diagrams and complete instructions for teacher use to illustrate the important concepts in the classic children's book Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling.
- This publication provides a brief review of the topics addressed in marine and aquatic education research between 1975 and 1990. The research includes knowledge and attitude testing of various groups, models of program evaluation, and comparisons of impact of education techniques. OUT OF PRINT. Click here for pdf.
- Three books of activities provide students in primary grades with activities relevant to Lake Erie. The activities apply to all primary subject areas.
